Founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, he is a disciple of Manjushri as depicted by the sword and book in the lotuses. Below him are his student disciples Khedrub Je is to his left and Gyaltsab Je to his right, both important figures in the Gelug tradition. One of the Gelug dharma protectors and special protector to Lama Tsongkhapa, Yama Dharmaja or Kalarupa is represented below and is a wrathful emanation of Manjushri.
This thangka was consecrated by monks as indicated by the marking on the back of the canvas around the deity and signature.
